2. Read the following passage and write a Precis reducing it to 14 of its length. (10 Marks)

‘Santiago is an old Cuban Fisherman in the famous novel ‘The old man and the sea’. For eighty four days,
he goes to sea but returns home empty handed. On the eighty fifth day he gets a big fish but loses it to
the sharks. The man still dreams of a good catch the next day. Every individual has the desire to achieve
success. While some people triumph over obstacles and crises one by one, others readily admit defeat.
“if you want to shine like 2 sun, first you burn like the sun”. Dr. 4.2. Abdul Kalam’s words give us the
secret of success. Power and social status are often considered to be the symbols of success. Power and
wealth may bring social acceptance. But social acceptance doesn’t mean that one is successful in life.
Success makes one happy and contended. External factors may not bring happiness. Happiness often
comes from within.

Many factors hinder success. Pride is a negative quality. Fear of failure and lack of confidence are
obstacles to success. Some people have a tendency to postpone things indefinitely while others give
up tasks at the last moment. Shortcuts often end up in failure. The proverb “a smooth sea never
makes a skilled sailor” is quite relevant here. The sailor's ability to steer the ship in turbulent seas
determines his success.

3. Read the passage and translate it into Malayalam. (10 Marks)

Epidemics are always a threat to human life. The victims of epidemics outnumber the casualties in wars
and natural disasters. The majority of epidemics are animal borne diseases. Extensive deforestation
destroys the natural habitat of birds and animals and they reach human habitations. Man comes
into contact with birds and animals in meat industry. The animals without being infected transmit
the virus either directly or through other animals, where the virus undergoes genetic modifications
increasing the risk and severity of the disease, to human beings. Environmental degradation and
climate change create favourable conditions for the spread of the disease. Human health can be
Preserved by ensuring a healthy environment with healthy animals and birds.

4. Translate the following passage to Malayalam (10 Marks)
ಹಿತ್ತಲಗಿಡ ಮದ್ದಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ನಾಣ್ಣುಡಿಯ: ವೆಲ್ಸರೂ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಜನಪದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀ ಸಾಮಾನ್ರರಿಂದಲೇ ರಜಿತವಾದ
ಗಿದೆ. ಜನಪದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವೆಂದರೆ ಅವಿದ್ಯಾವಂತರು ರಚಿಸಿದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವೆಂದು ಯಾರೂ ಅದನು ತೆಗಳಬೆಣಾಗಿಲ್ಲ
ೀಗೆಂದ ಮಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವೆಲ್ಲಾ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮವಾದುದು ಎಂದು ಯಾರೂ ಭಾವಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಈಸಾಹಿತ್ತದಲ್ಲೂ ನಮ್ಮ
ಪರಿಶೀಲನೆಗೆ ಯೋಗ್ಯವಾದ ಅಂಶಗಳು ಉಂಟೆಂಬುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕ್ಪತವಾದ ವಿಷಯ. ಕೆಲವು ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದಾಗಲಂತೂ
ಶಾರದೆಯೇ ಈ ಕವಿಗಳ ಬಾಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತು ನುಡಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಳೆಂದು ನಮಗೆ ಸಷವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪದಗಳ ಸ್ತಾರಸ್ತ, ಹೋಲಿಕೆ
ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿಯಾದ ಕವಿಗಳು ರಚಿಸಿರುವ ಪದ್ಯಗಳಸ್ವಾ ರಸ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವ ರೀತಿಯಿಂದಲೂ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲಆದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ
ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರೂ ಕೂಡಾ ಇವುಗಳ ಸೊಗಸಿಗೆ ಮರುಳಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಕೊರವಂಜಿಯ ಪದ್ಯಗಳಿವೆ. ಸುಗ್ಗಿಯ ಕುಣಿತದ ಹಾಡುಗಳಿವೆ. ಹೆಜ್ಜೇನು ಒಂದೇ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ ಈ ಜನಪದ
ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ವೈವಿಧ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮಿತಿಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲ.
