The definition of humane is a kind, tender and compassionate person. An example of humane is someone
who stops to help push a person’s car that has stopped in the middle of the road. A person having or
showing concern for the pain or suffering of another can be called as Humane.
Life is a journey fram human being to being humane.
We are born as humans in this worldly existence but the choice for being humane is a conscious one. As
far beyond we can see the human civilization has survived and will survive on humanity and compassion.
It is the journey from being born as humans to higher self the idea of collective good and consciousness
which makes us humane and explore the divinity within us. India is often called the land of divines it is
here where all the major religions of the world have originated.
All human beings when they embraced the values of compassion, empathy become humane and serve for
humanity rising above their parochial interests. Since time and again the journey of life from being human
to being humane has been seen in many great personalities.
Starting from the ancient times, some of the great examples are, Buddha a normal human being born as
a king transformed himself into the ocean of compassion, calmness and served humanity for many years
and inspired many people like the great king Ashoka. Before the Kalinga war he was simply a cruel human
being but after the war when he replaced bherighosha with dhammaghosha and adopted dhamma in his
state policy transformed himself into humane and was able to preserve the social order, adopt the values
of tolerance, cultural conquest and social harmony.
Going by the timeline the examples can be taken to the medieval times the great ruler Akbar after coming
into power realized the importance of humanity in the form of a collective religion which is commingling of
all religions. In the later part of his life he moved towards spirituality for the sake of embracing humanity
as the ultimate religion and promotion of humane values.
The modern times embrace their own journey of people from human being to being humane. Notable
people such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy the pioneer of modern India out of his humane virtue led the attack
on Sati and finally helped in its abolition.
Ramkrishna Paramhamsan and his great disciple Swami Vivekananda was also the pioneer of human service
and Neo Hinduism. Vivekananda said that it is a crime to teach religion to a starving man and service to
God is service to mankind. He established Ramakrishna Mission for the welfare of humankind. He was
born as human being as Narendranath Dutta but became humane after becoming Swami Vivekananda.
The human civilization has made progress and will make progress in the future but the virtue of humanity
is what imbibes us to achieve the higher purpose in life. This has also been emphasized as “Vasudev
kutumbakam” that the entire world 15 a family and all the humans are all part of that big family by the
virtue of being humans and bound by the thread of humanity.
As quoted in the words of DALAI LAMA “There is nothing on Earth as divine as the virtue of humanity”.
